Alibaba, 1688 and alternative supplier-search channels

Direct answer

Alibaba is designed for international B2B trade, while 1688 mainly serves China’s domestic market. Neither platform guarantees factory status, export readiness, compliance or the final landed cost. Use each as a discovery channel and independently verify the underlying registered company.

01

What Alibaba is good at

Alibaba makes international communication, export quotations and cross-border payment workflows more accessible. It is useful for discovery and comparison, but supplier badges, catalogue photos and transaction history do not replace checks on the legal entity and production site.

  • Confirm whether the profile represents the contractual entity.
  • Request the exact Incoterm and included services.
  • Check whether catalogue claims match the sample.

02

What 1688 changes

1688 can reveal domestic suppliers, wholesalers and price structures that do not appear on international platforms. Listings are aimed at Chinese buyers: domestic delivery, Chinese communication, tax treatment, payment and export handling may require local coordination.

  • A displayed price may depend on quantity or a simplified specification.
  • Domestic pricing is not automatically an export-ready total.
  • Some sellers are distributors rather than manufacturers.

03

Use platforms as leads, not conclusions

Create a common request for quotation, map each profile to its legal entity, verify production capability and compare samples under the same specification. A strong sourcing process can also use industrial clusters, trade fairs and offline networks.

  • Never compare headline prices without checking specifications.
  • Keep evidence and communication tied to the supplier file.
  • Do not move payments to an unrelated beneficiary.

Questions people ask

Is 1688 always cheaper than Alibaba?

No. A lower displayed domestic price may exclude export packaging, tax, local collection, documents, quality control and international logistics. Compare the same scope.

Does a verified badge prove a supplier is a factory?

A badge can be one signal, but factory status and capability should be checked against the legal entity, business scope, production evidence and, where justified, an audit.
